Alabama Committee Approves Bill Banning Gender-Affirming Treatment for Children

The Alabama House Judiciary Committee approved a bill on Wednesday that bans the use of hormone therapy, surgeries, and other gender-affirming treatments for transgender minors. The committee passed the Alabama Vulnerable Child Compassion and Protection Act by a vote of 11-3 after adding an amendment that would still allow mental health workers to counsel young people on transgender therapy options. Alabama is one of multiple states now considering laws that ban treatment for children or enforce other anti-transgender policies, despite objections from medical professionals, parents, and LGBTQ advocates.
